We'll be going from this:
This was a request by a couple different people actually because of these posts:
I'm using Photoshop CS2, but I'm sure it's compatible with most Photoshop versions.
Step 1: I skipped the cropping of the base image since most of you know what you want as far as that goes already, so we'll be starting with this base (or one of your choice):
(For your reference, the original image is this one.)
a.
Always make a copy of your base layer so that you can go back and start over if you have to. Once you have a copy, use the blur tool at %50 and clean her skin up a little bit (because for some reason this promo pic wasn't edited very well):
b.
Step 2: Now that her skin is cleaned, add a new layer and fill with #87dcd2 and set the color layer mode to "color burn" with an opacity of %36 (opacity varies by picture, but wait until you've added the next two selective color layers to decide where you want to leave this layer):
c.
Step 3: Here comes the selective layer part. I created a new selective color layer (Layer/new adjustment layer/selective color) with these settings:
Reds
Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: +100
Black: 0
Yellows
Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: +100
Black: 0
Greens
Cyan: 0
Magenta: +100
Yellow: +100
Black: +100
Set the opacity of this first adjustment layer to %50 (just experiment and see what works for your icon's original colors--but wait until the next selective color layer is up to decide where to leave it).
that gives you this:
d.
Step 4: Create a second selective color layer (Layer/new adjustment layer/selective color) with these settings:
Reds
Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: +100
Black: 0
Yellows
Cyan: +40
Magenta: -40
Yellow: -100
Black: +30
Nuetrals
Cyan: +18
Magenta: 0
Yellow: -11
Black: -8
that gave me this:
d.
Of course each picture is different, and these are just a guideline you can experiment with. Also--if you're lazy like me, you don't like putting in all those numbers for selective color layers. What I do is keep at least one icon saved layered and open that when making new icons with the same color so that I can just copy the layers and adjust their opacity to fit the image.
Let me know if this was helpful! Comment here with any questions, and I'll do my best to help :)
As always, enjoy

I tried adding a very light yellow color with the tutorial and was able to come up with my current icon's coloring.
I also found out that it was the black in Neutrals that is responsible for the 'creamy-ness' lol.
but thank you still! Wonderful tut. Very useful. Because of you I was able to make my latest icon batch. :)
